What car has the worst interior you've ever sat in?
I honestly can't choose between two different ones.
2009 Avenger R/T or 2004 Silverado
Both are cheap and plastic messes. And really show how shit American car interiors used to be.
What are your picks?

There had to have been some GM interiors from the 90s that were worse?
The worst expensive car interior I've been in was an early Porsche 996 Carrera. It was awful. Plastic everywhere. And poorly done plastic. The pictures you posted look better than the interior I sat in. The entire interior was a light grey plastic. Ugh.

1983 Opel Rekord was REALLY BAD, but that's because it was falling apart. 1995 Lada Samara is also up there. Recently, I've been in a '90 Golf Diesel, and that was utter shit since everything was broken
![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:05 |

I'm sure there are worse from the 90s, but I've never sat in them.
A Porsche having a bad interior!?

regrettably, I've sat in a PT Cruiser. It's cheap looking and feeling, and it's ugly.

Lol, Lada.

When my little sister puked Lucky Charms marshmallows all over the close quarters of my dad's old Ranger... THAT was the worst interior I've ever sat in.

Avenger hands down. At least the Silverado has big comfy 'Merican seats.

Jeep patriot/compass or 2nd gen or later prius. the patriot/compass wins on awful quality everything. The prius on utter lack of trying to be even remotely engaging. and it's not WTF bad like the alfa milano and its roof mounted window switches. just a boring pain in the ass.

OH GOD KILL IT WITH FIRE.
...Is that the steering wheel that early JK Wranglers had?
![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:09 |

and that seating position is so awkward. I constantly felt like I was about to fall off the seat when I drove one.
I like that shifter tho
![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:10 |

I've always thought the seats in the Avenger were comfy as well. Seems to be the only thing worth anything in either of them.
![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:10 |

I sat in them but can't remember which cars they were because it was so long ago, lol.
Yes look how awful they were!

Since when are roof mounted window switches WTF bad!?
![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:12 |

Jesus fucking Christ that looks HORRIBLE. The Avenger even looks better than that.

Rental Aveo. Cheapest, shittiest interior I've ever seen in a car, and I once drove a Yugo around the block.
Literally every surface was covered in hard, cheap plastic that had too much give in all the wrong places. Ours had under 20k miles and everything creaked and rattled. Terrible.
![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:13 |
|
Told you! It was truly bad. GM had nothing on the early 996s, LOL
![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:14 |

Prius interiors aren't bad. I love the purple tinted soft touch plastic, and there is so many cubies, plus the rear legroom, and rear cargo room is awesome.
As much as I don't like Priuses(pri-i?) they aren't that bad for people that don'r care about performance,or the joy of driving, or rowing gears.

1983 Mercury Lynx and 1987 Nissan Sentra.
Pretty much any 80s/90s car, truck or van was complete crap conpared to your examples.
You young guns don't know how good you have it today.
Dag nabbit!
![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:15 |

Sometimes I don't even think of the Aveo as a car, just some cheap go-cart with performance and quality to match.

looks like it, steering wheel sharing isn't too uncommon within brand families.
![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:17 |

haha I hated how I felt in that car, it just didn't feel right as far as position.
And yeah, that shifter is kind if Ferrari-esque.

My neighbors replaced their wrecked PT Cruiser(which is still sitting in their front yard gathering weeds) with a...............................wait for it..................................Caliber.

You've convinced me. Raising the stakes time: Any non Designo or AMG merc has the blandest interiors available, E class being the most boring.
![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:18 |

My 94 van uses about equal material quality to the Silverado and Avenger. It seems to be screwed together about as well.
But really comfy seats, real wood (yes mine has real wood), and a slightly squishy dash make up for it.
![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:19 |

my friends 86 928s interior is made out of cardboard, it is a real piece of shit compared to my 745i
![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:20 |

Except I would generally think of go karts as being fun. The only fun that came from this car was literally caring so little about it that I actually wanted to hurt it.

The most recently killed off Mitsubishi Galant. it's full of hard plastics, and there wasn't any goddamn shiny trim. And those black seats feel like sandpaper
![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:33 |

I'm all for a crap interior until the seats suck.
At least in the Avenger and Silverado they're nice.
![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:35 |

The base Carrera probably started around $60K in 1999. The C4s with some options was probably six figures. And the Turbo was too.
I really dunno how anyone spent 6 figures on that crap.

Also did you see TTAC's Porsche's deadly sins piece on the 996?

first gen new beetle, Its interior was god damn awful. never actually got to drive it though.
![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:44 |

![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:46 |

What about the New Beetle wasn't awful though?
![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:50 |

I googled it just now and...well...that's rather dissapointing...depressing, really.
Suddenly the 911/Vette rivalry makes sense now. I wonder how many 996 owners 'traded down' to a similar sports car with crappy interior bits, but much better engine reliability and waaaaaaaaaaaaaay lower parts costs. I don't know if I could stomach handing over $15k after paying $75k to have them fix what they knew was broken in the first place...
![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:51 |
|
Yep, they are both silver. Silver is worse than beige.
![]() 06/30/2014 at 02:53 |

I feel sad just looking at that interior. So straight and angular.
Even the Dacia Sandero has a better dashboard (actually quite nice).

2002 Fiat Multipla.

![]() 06/30/2014 at 03:01 |

That whole car should have never seen production... EVER.
![]() 06/30/2014 at 03:05 |

Anyone who blindly picks the 911 over the Vette is not doing their homework. It's always good to do your research and pick the best choice at that given time. Sometimes the Corvette is the better car and sometimes the 911 is. All depends on who is on top of their game at that time.
![]() 06/30/2014 at 03:06 |

So true. Though I did get used to it after seeing one parked outside my neighbours house for two years. Thankfully I never see them these days.

Saturn Ion. Oh. Em. Gee. I really had no idea that a car could be this shitty until I served time inside a Saturn Ion. And it wasn't just the materials that were bad, the layout and ergonomics were shitty too. The seats are hard, unsupportive and wrapped in a leather that feels like it was left on the cow to rot for a week before being put into the car. The doors were thin and flimsy, the dashbaord was made out of some kind of plastic papery material. It really made me understand why some people loathe GM so much. Before I sat in this beauty, I thought people were exaggerating how bad GM interiors were. Now I know they' weren't, I can't hate this thing enough.
![]() 06/30/2014 at 03:13 |
|
The Ion was horrible and anyone who bought one new was on drugs. It wouldn't have been nearly as horrible if they would just PUT THE FUCKING GAUGES WHERE THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO GO.
![]() 06/30/2014 at 03:18 |
|
The gauges are the least of the Ion's problems. At least the quirky gauges tried to be interesting, they tried to be something other than just a complete pile of grey plastic shit. Yeah it's a stupid idea, but at least it was an idea. The rest of the car can't even say that.

2004 Ford Taurus. That upholstery just made me squirm
![]() 06/30/2014 at 03:21 |

Lets say this: A proper replacement for the S-Series of cars it most certainly was not.
![]() 06/30/2014 at 03:23 |

Hey! My girlfriend has an '02 and it really isn't that bad. Unless of course they changed and cheapened things even more between '02 and '04...
![]() 06/30/2014 at 03:24 |

The interior felt like dollar store velvet, yuch
![]() 06/30/2014 at 03:26 |

It's hardly a proper replacement for taking the bus.
![]() 06/30/2014 at 03:27 |

The seat material? Same stuff that's in my van and my dad's truck. Could be worse and be cheap horrible vinyl like the seats in her old Camry.

Valid.

Although I agree the Ion was a shitty car even among an era of shitty shittiness.... The Ion Redline was pretty damn fast for its day, and very fun to drive. It was a serious sleeper.

Saturn Ion.

2004 Chevrolet Cavalier. My mother lucked out and scored one as a rental when the brand-new Sienna went in for a fuel pump recall. It was...awful, much worse than the Chrysler Sebring with the knife-edge flash on the e-brake handle that nearly cut my hand open.
Most cars came with cloth seats. These were lined with the kind of tweed you'd see on a 40-year-old WASP's wedding suit. Forget lining - they were paper thin and had as much support as a dinner plate.
Rather than building a better interior, Chevrolet apparently focused their entire interior budget on maximizing steering wheel spokes. Either that, or they just melted a regular steering wheel, realized they were out of money, said fuck it, and shoved it on while they listened to American Idiot (this was 2004, remember).
To make matters worse, the morons running the service department swapped out the fuel pumps for the cars WITHOUT appointments first before tackling the cars with appointments so we were stuck with this piece of shit for two-three weeks.
I didn't play around much with that car but I remember it just being the most miserable little car ever. The Acura Integra that replaced it (the Sienna was a touch too big for the small city; it was demoted) somehow managed to outclass the interior despite the 9-year age gap. Frankly, it was easy to see why GM went bankrupt at the end of the decade.
![]() 06/30/2014 at 05:03 |

Well, it was a design based back in the mid 90s. And 2004 was the final year for it, the Cobalt was better.

2005 was the final year for it.

Somehow I knew my car would show up here. I dunno why, but I like the interior of mine. It's got 3 pedals though.
I like that it doesn't have a touch screen or a lot of buttons. I hate touch screens...and buttons.
![]() 06/30/2014 at 09:48 |

It's a tie, between:
The old Chrysler 300:
The Dodge Journey:
The Jeep Commander (sorry, MontegoMan):
the Dodge Nitro/Jeep Liberty:
aaaand the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Just kidding Dodge Durango.
These are just the ones I've sat in, but I'm sure every 2005-2009 Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge product could make the list. Most American interiors of that period were cheap, but Chrysler was in a class of their own.

![]() 06/30/2014 at 10:01 |

Ive actually been in both! And also a refresh Avenger. Mhhhhhm. Tough choice, but I have to go with the Avenger. It was the base model with beige interior. Just no.

HOLY CRAP IT IS! And I bet you the sick of the gear lever is the same as well. Damn, that is such a HORRID steering wheel.

nah, silvers not that bad

![]() 06/30/2014 at 16:11 |

300: I always thought it was okay. Never a true luxury car like they wanted it to be, just okay.
Journey: Oh god put it out of it's misery.
Commander: It might've been okay if they didn't try to market it as a somewhat upmarket SUV.
Nitro/Liberty: I have a soft spot for these, so I'm a little more positive about them than the average person
Durango: This entire generation of Durango should have never seen production IMO.
![]() 06/30/2014 at 16:12 |

Oh god, base model beige. At least the one I ride in has black R/T leather and a great stereo.
![]() 06/30/2014 at 22:19 |

Man, or should I say SafariVanMan. The base model and the R/T is like going surfing to the beach, or going to Walgreens and getting hit by a biker.
